Hamster Mites: Getting Rid of Them Fast

Monday, November 21st, 2011

Hamsters are great pets to have but what you’re going to soon find out is that these pets commonly have problems such as lice as well as mites. While this is rather normal for many pets out there, there are some things that you can do in order to get rid of them for good. Listed below are some tips that one can use when they want to get rid of mites on their hamster.

Clean up the environment: The first thing that you’re going to want to do is clean up the hamster cage. Take out everything from the cage and proceed to clean it out. There’s a rather good chance that these mites and fleas are still floating around in the cage. It doesn’t hurt to wash down the cage as well as rinse it out with bleach. If doing so, make sure that you wait a few hours before putting the hamster back in it’s cage.

Examine the pet: What you’re going to want to do is study the back of your hamster. If you look closely, you will notice that there will be rather noticeable specs that are black. If you spot these black specs, you’re going to want to get a damp cloth and proceed to wash them away on your hamster. Continue to check three times a day during the week until you don’t spot them anymore.

Commercial mite sprays: According to the website Mygetridofguide, they have a solid guide on how to get rid of fleas on hamsters. What they noted that I didn’t think of is that you can get commercial sprays that work wonders on these pets. What you’re going to do is slightly spray them once a day. Popular sprays will cost no more than $5 in your local pet store. Be sure to read into the reviews before buying one as there are some that just don’t work that good.

After you have done all this, it’s best to make sure that you keep your house clean as well. This will mean vacuuming your floors as well as making sure that your floors are mopped with bleach. The last thing that you want to have happen is that the mites spread to other parts of the home partially effecting other pets such as dogs or animals that you may have.

What to Do when Fly Season Starts

Thursday, July 14th, 2011

People welcome the onset of warm weather because they can start to enjoy different outdoor adventures. Unfortunately, it is also the start of the fly season. Flies breed throughout the year but they are particularly abundant during late spring, summer, and early fall. If you have pets or farm animals, then you need to double your effort in controlling the fly population especially during the months of June and July.

Some species of flies are generally considered as temporary annoyance. But there is a specific family that you need to monitor. This is the black fly family which is categorized as pests in many areas. Black flies are blood suckers and they can make your farm animals and pets sick. Worse, they also bite humans. Small children are particularly vulnerable to these flies. Keeping your property clean is one of the best ways of combating black flies. Before the fly season starts, make sure that your yard is well groomed. It is also important to dispose trash properly to reduce fly population.

You need to remember that you are dealing with a very immature dog, when training your puppy. Free dog training is a great way to teach your dog how to understand what is wrong and what is right. You need to be realistic, patient, understanding and fair. Sometimes you need to give your puppy the benefit of the doubt. How would your puppy know this stuff. Fact is, they wouldn’t. It’s very new to them and you need to understand that they will mess up from time to time. They are trying and they will get it sooner or later. Hopefully sooner for your sake. Just stay positive and look for the good in your dog. They will recognize this and thrive on pleasing you. The more you acknowledge this, the more they will get a kick out of doing it. Crate training a dachshund is not really difficult and time-consuming if you know exactly what to do and where to start. And if you are equipped with the necessary crate training tools and information, then such dog training endeavor can be surely achieved with flying colors. Patience and persistence

Dachshunds can be really a handful given that such breed is naturally very stubborn and strong-willed. They can irritate you to the extent that you already want to make use of harsh dog training methods. However, always keep in mind that severe punishments are never effective and beneficial. It could only worsen your dachshund’s behavior. Thus, see to it you have more than enough patience to spare so you don’t end up making the wrong decisions. Be persistent enough and don’t even think of quitting the moment you decided to start training your dachshund. Otherwise, many things can go wrong; accidents may occur.

Discipline and consistency

Dachshunds need to be guided and disciplined well. They need assertive and responsible pack leaders so that behavior problems like dominance and aggression are less likely to develop. You should be able to convince your pet that you are the alpha dog. Leadership and discipline must work hand and hand. Of course, consistency should also be given priority. Remember, it is through consistency that you get to constantly remind your dachshund what he needs to do; it could be your way to making him master all the rules and dachshund training for obedience commands that you want him to learn and understand.

Difference Between Wet Cat Food and the Dry One

Sunday, May 15th, 2011

Dry cat food has a moisture content of 10 percent which is very less and it is manufactured under conditions of high temperature. The wet food also known as the canned food has more amount of moisture as its name suggests. It has close to 78 percent of water. There are standard sizes in which it is seen available in the markets – in sizes of three Oz or 85 grams to 369 grams. Cats do not seek any difference between these two kinds. Moreover they just have a bite of it two to three times a day, instead of chewing the food. They lack some of the major digestive enzymes and hence it is better to feed them in a more easily swallowable and digestible forms. Dry foods have more of grains and starch (either potato or tapioca starch). To make it more appealing to eat, the fat is just incorporated along with minerals and vitamins.

Raw Dog Food Against Processed Food

Saturday, May 14th, 2011

My brother told me that I need to switch to processed foods to provide my pet meaningful diet. I refused his proposal. I know that raw foods are still more nutritious than processed foods. My brother wanted a proof that a raw dog food is really healthier than the other. I showed him my research. He found out that raw foods are rich in vitamins and minerals to sustain the health of pets. He also learned that raw foods have enzymes to help in the easy digestion of foods. I told him that processed foods can trigger skin diseases among dogs. If one day he would find the dog getting a fever or continuously licking in different parts of its body, that is due to allergic reactions. Well, he believed in me and changed his disposition. He stopped purchasing processed foods and switched to raw foods to provide meals for our dog.

We Are Getting a Pet Cat

Tuesday, April 19th, 2011

Cat health and nutrition is our topic of conversation last week. My kids and I are all cat lovers and we are seriously considering getting a pet cat. We already have a pet dog, which my husband insisted on having last year. It’s really not a problem because we love Poofey, our dog. He is really clever and always follows our command. He demonstrates real care for our kids and for our household. He is a yellow lab. He is very playful and loves to go swimming on our pool whenever he feels hot. We just can’t wait to see how he behaves when our cat arrives. I bet he will be curious and a little jealous at the same time.

So we made our final decision on which type of cat to get from our local pet store. We decided to get a female cat if it is available and we’d like a gray cat. Too bad Garfield’s not for sale. We adore him on cartoons as well as in the movies.

Cats and Dogs: Changing Our World

Saturday, April 2nd, 2011

If we want to find new ways to make sure that dogs stay healthy, we’re going to have to start with puppies. It’s sad that the building blocks of good health simply disappear in some neighborhoods. We are often infuriated by the ways we are betrayed by the media. The media types want to convince us that dogs are better than cats, and vice versa. But we need to recognize that cats and dogs can do what they can, and they can never do anything else. Where do we get off trying to compare animals to humans? Let’s face it, animals can really do a lot of wonderful things. Unfortunately, it seems that animals are turning into beacons of grace for humanity. Time after time, we’re finding that animals are losing their ability to think gracefully about the problems. It’s time for puppies to feel as safe as their human owners.

Status Epilepticus: What Threat Does It Pose to Your Pets Life?

Wednesday, March 16th, 2011

Some dog owners have never seen their dogs have a seizure before. Some have seen their pets trembling on the ground but the episode lasts for a very short while. But there are also other dog owners who have seen their dogs collapse, lose muscle control, go stiff, and tremble and shiver madly without apparent cause. The worst thing about this is that the episode may last for several minutes and even up to half an hour long. This can be extremely alarming for a dog owner. This type of seizure is called status epilepticus – a tyoe of seizures in dogs. Status epilepticus is a very life-threatening condition and it is caused by the occurrence of persistent seizure in the brain. Epilepsy may be one cause for this, but environmental toxic reactions and brain tumors may also exhibit status epilepticus as a symptom. As a condition in itself, this type of seizure is not idiopathic and there is always a root cause for it. There is also a lot of medications, especially depressants, which are given to dogs that experience this kind of problem.

Buying Ethical Gifts

Friday, March 4th, 2011

These days I always buy ethical gifts from websites such as adoptanorangutan.org.uk rather than buying the same old popular gifts from the main high street shops and brands. I always feel that I probably don’t do enough to support charities and social enterprise projects so a good opportunity to correct this is when I’m buying gifts.

The great thing these days is that there are so many ethical gifts that you can buy.

Take the site above, where you can buy an orangutan adoption pack. This is something which provides money to charities who help orangutans.

Alternatively you can buy ethical gifts which are energy-saving, helping to prevent the escalation of global warming. Some of these gifts really are win-win. For example, I purchased an eco kettle for a friend of mine and they absolutely love it. The kettle saves them money, boils quicker, and also uses less energy which helps to prevent global warming.

Dog Training Tips for the Whole Family

Monday, December 13th, 2010

Are you and your entire family planning to conduct different kinds of dog training? If you want to get the best results, then make sure that you take these dog training tips into consideration:

Don’t get too excited or exaggerated.

Training a dog can be so overwhelming; yet, you need to be calm, observant and very patient. Over-excitement can startle your dog or trigger his hyperactive state. You must be careful with the kind of energy you display toward your pet. Otherwise, it can jeopardize the progress of your dog’s training. You might even end up scaring your dog.

Enforce uniform dog training commands.

Consistency is a very important factor in dog training. Thus, see to it that you give similar instructions so as not to confuse the dog. Use short and clear and easy to understand obedience commands. Teach one command at a time. Do not force your dog to learn in an instant. The whole family should know which commands to teach, review and use daily.

Make every session productive and fun.

Dogs easily get tired and bored, particularly if you do lengthy trainings. Always try to come up with interesting dog training activities. Try to mix play and learning. Of course, see to it that you provide several dog treats during training. This will motivate your dog to properly carry out your commands. But, you need to give dog treats in moderation.
