Do Use A Sauna Whisk?
Sauna whisks.
Throughout Finland sauna whisks are called both vihta or vasta. In the most classic style, the vihta as well as vasta is a dense bunch of fresh, tender, leafy birch sticks utilized to encourage blood circulation and cleansing the sauna users skin as soon as perspiration has softened it. The sauna user basically flagellates or slaps themselves with the sticks after soaking them in water. Even though the level of force used typically depends on individual preference, this exercise is not meant to be painful and lots of Finnish sauna fanatics see no problem with requesting another individual in the sauna to strike them with the vihta. Purists may debate that bundled birch branches make the ideal sauna whisks, but, in certain places where birch is difficult to find, cedar or spruce may also be used. Whether the branches are birch, cedar or willow, the hitting motion creates a pleasant aroma that is released in to the air. Some other possible alternatives include cherry, maple, ash, willow and eucalyptus.
